BERITA SOLO - Pieces of teak wood waste are transformed into carvings in the form of sketches of the faces of 2019 President and Vice-President, Joko Widodo (Jokowi) and KH Ma'ruf Amin.
The creative craft was made by Saiful Huda (35), a resident of Randusari Village, Gadingrejo District, Pasuruan Regency, East Java.
The idea came to Saiful's head when his furniture business fell and he found a lot of wood waste scattered in the river after the floods receded.
"Instead of lamenting the arrears of the customers who never paid in full, up to hundreds of millions and my capital thinned. Finally I tried to create with pieces of wood, then carve it. Apparently the results are good," said Saiful, Thursday (04/07/2019).
As of four months, the father of three children is in the creative arts business. Every month, he and his engraver are able to complete 10 carved paintings that are priced at Rp. 1.5 million per unit.
Estimated workmanship, one work completed in 3 to 4 days. Although only focusing on the national market, the 10 works were immediately sold.
"For the carving of Mr. Jokowi's face and Mr. Ma'ruf Amin, I sold it for Rp. 1.75 million. It is more expensive, because there are two faces and it is difficult. All of them are made from used wood waste," he said.
Saiful, who has been involved in carving for 19 years, added that there are three initial stages to processing teak wood waste to get out the aura of art. The first is the "rustic" process to bring out teak fibers, then paint and clean the paint.
"Our difficulty at the moment is too many orders. We are overwhelmed. There aren't many engravers who want to, because it's complicated," he explained. (R-07/ Foto dok. Jatimnow))
